The following is an excerpt from “Do Not Grow Weary in Prayer and Fasting,” written faithfully each week for nearly 10 years by Jerry Hale, Spiritual Emphasis Committee Chair for the Growing and Building Campaign.
“I’ve been blessed by the best!” So stated former NFL great Brian Dawkins at a recent Men’s First Monday event at Christ Community Church in West Chester, PA. Dawkins’ standard response to the traditional, “How are you?” question may seem like a simplistic view of scripture. Yet, it stands in marked contrast to the answer I got from my own, “How are you?” question to a Valley Forge employee early this morning. Her, “It’s only Tuesday!” reply communicated an entirely different world view.
How about you? Are you, “Blessed by the best!” or are you an “It’s only Tuesday,” kind of person. I expect it is the former. Dawkins went on to tell his life story, essentially the Christian message that Jesus Christ is the answer to all of life’s issues, whether one is an all-star football player or from any other walk of life. I attended the event in my role as a board member for the local Fellowship of Christian Athletes ministry. I brought along Trevor, a young high school cadet, to encourage him in the faith and to assist with passing out “Sport’s” New Testaments to the 700 or so present for the event.
As you might imagine, I was greatly encouraged in the faith by the evening myself. It is also easy to be encouraged by the glorious fall weather we have been experiencing these past few weeks in southeastern PA. God’s marvelous handiwork is evident in the cool, blue sky days, marked with the brilliant red, orange, and golden leaves all aglow in the fall sun. However, the greatest encouragement of all is that we serve a personal God who calls each of us to represent him as he builds his church in our communities. Our calling is to build faith into the lives of our families, our friends, our neighbors, and those we meet in the work place.
